Updated: Oct 28, 2021
Have you decided to start your first ever DIY home painting project but you are not sure how much paint you will need? Find out how much is your estimated paint needed before buying paint. By knowing the right amount you will need, you can save money and avoid paint wastage. There are several methods on how you can estimate the paint you need to buy.
Paint Calculator Apps
There are a lot of downloadable paint calculator apps available that are very easy to use.
Paint calculators are also available on different paint companies' websites, we wrote some of the links below.
1. Measure the area to be painted in sqft
2. Get the total surface area by measuring the width and the height of the walls. Multiply the width and the height.
Tip: Write the measurement of the areas per color or type of paint to use separately
3. Measure the surface area of windows and doors and add them all together. Subtract the total surface area of windows and doors to the total surface area of your wall to obtain the total painting surface area.
4. Multiply the total painting surface area by the number of coats you need. Normally, you will need at least two coats of paint
Tip: Add a little extra for some necessary touch-ups.
Generally, 1 gallon of paint can cover about 400 sqft. If the walls are unpainted drywall, which absorbs more paint, you will be needing more than a gallon. Consider also if you will paint more than 1 coat. Dark color, heavily patched, or unfinished walls are recommended to have two coats.
By knowing how much paint to buy, you will be able to plan your budget and you do not need to make extra trips to purchase more if the paints are not enough.
